Save Sandhill Cranes from Drowning in Dirty Oil
Dear Friend, Each year, more than half a million sandhill cranes make their annual stopover in Nebraska's central Platte River valley -- a green oasis that cranes rely on to rest and eat before heading further north. But if Canadian oil companies get their way, a massive pipeline could soon be carrying tar sands oil right through this fragile habitat -- putting sandhill cranes at risk from a spill that could contaminate their water and food supply, and cover them in toxic oil. In fact, Congress is expected to vote on legislation to expedite a final decision on the pipeline as soon as this week. Please speak up today to help protect crucial sandhill crane habitat from toxic tar sands oil. The U.S. State Department recently released a new environmental assessment that fails to address the enormous risks of the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline on wildlife like the sandhill crane. While there is growing national opposition to the pipeline, there is also renewed pressure to move ahead with this dangerous project. Be a voice for sandhill cranes -- urge our federal officials to stop the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline today. We're running an aggressive field campaign in target states affected by the pipeline, such as Montana and Nebraska. We're ready to fight this pipeline tooth and nail--but we need your help. The Keystone XL pipeline would pump up to 900,000 barrels per day of this dirty oil from Canada's tar sands -- one of the most polluting and destructive operations on earth -- through Nebraska and five other heartland states. It would cross some of the most pristine land in the country and the Ogallala Aquifer, a vital source of farmland irrigation and drinking water. Please speak up today to protect America's sandhill cranes for future generations. Thanks for all you do for wildlife! |
