There’s a plan on Capitol Hill that would slash Social Security benefits as part of a deficit reduction package. Backers are trying to keep it hidden by calling it inflation adjustment. But changing the way Social Security cost of living adjustments are calculated would cut the average benefit by as much as $1,000 a year, says the Alliance for Retired Americans.
