Dear Friend,
Yesterday, Democrats in the House led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi took action and passed an extension of tax cuts for the middle class while allowing the Bush administration's tax giveaways to the wealthiest Americans to expire.
But almost immediately, the White House signaled it would cave on ending Bush era tax cuts for the rich. We can't allow that to happen.
The Senate has scheduled a vote for tomorrow. The time to act is now.
After the House passed the bill that would end the tax cuts for American families making more than $250,000 a year, the White House issued a statement saying that the President had instructed his tax cuts commission, headed by Tim Geithner, to work out a compromise with Senate Republicans.
We have a chance to build on the momentum from the House vote. President Obama should not pre-emptively cave on an issue that is so overwhelmingly popular with voters. He must fight back and make Senators stand up and go on record with a vote on a bill that will roll back one of the most destructive policies of the Bush administration.
President Obama can't let Republicans and conservative Democrats off the hook by rewarding their behavior. And caving on costly tax cuts for Americans who don't need them won't help our economy.
The Bush tax cuts, like the Iraq War, are one of the primary drivers of large federal deficit. And like the Iraq War, the Bush tax cuts were sold to the public through outright deception. It's time to end the deception and let one of the worst policies of the Bush era expire at the end of the year.
Please take action and tell President Obama now is not the time to cave. It is time to fight.
