Today in History: On November 3, 1972, 500 American Indians took over the Bureau of Indian Affairs building in Washington, D.C. The event was the end of the Trail of Broken Treaties aimed to bring Native American awareness to the nation. The members of the American Indian Movement showed up at the BIA to negotiate for better housing. When denied, protestors began vandalizing the building. They would occupy the building until the 9th. They caused $700,000 worth of damage, including the destruction of treaties, deeds, and water rights records.
